Byname Baldwin The Bearded, French Baudouin Le Barbu, Dutch BoudewijnDe Schone Baard count of Flanders (988/1035) who greatly expanded theFlemish dominions. He fought successfully both against the Capetian kingof France, Robert II, and the Holy Roman emperor Henry II. Henry foundhimself obliged to grant to Baldwin IV in fief Valenciennes, theburgraveship of Ghent, the land of Waes, and Zeeland. The count ofFlanders thus became a feudatory of the empire as well as of the Frenchcrown. The French fiefs are known in Flemish history as Crown Flanders(Kroon-Vlaanderen), the German fiefs as Imperial Flanders(Rijks-Vlaanderen). Baldwin's son, afterwards Baldwin V—, rebelled in1028 against his father at the instigation of his wife Adela, daughter ofRobert II of France; but two years later peace was sworn at Oudenaarde, and the old count continued to reign until his death.

    • Baldwin IV of Flanders, known as the Bearded, was count of Flanders from 988 to 1037.
He was the son of Arnulf II of Flanders.

Baldwin turned his attentions to the east and north, leaving the southern part of his territory in the hands of his vassals the counts of Guines, Hesdin, and St. Pol.

To the east was Lotharingia, and here Baldwin took Valenciennes, the Cambresis, and Hainaut. It was not until 1056, during the minority of the Emperor Henry IV, then he fully secured this territory, which was then recognized as fier held of the emperor.

In the more central and northerly parts of Flanders, the counts supremacy was unchallenged. Here there was a great deal of internal colonization of marshland, all of which belonged to the counts of Flanders.

Baldwin first married Ogive of Luxemburg, and was succeeded by their son Baldwin V. He later married Eleanor of Normandy, daughter of Richard II of Normandy, by whom he had a daughter Judith. She married first Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumberland, and then Duke Welf of Bavaria. These widespread family connections demonstrate the political interests of the Flemish counts, both in England to the west and in Germany to the east.

    • Baldwin IV of Flanders (980\endash May 30, 1036), known as the Bearded, was Count of Flanders from 988 until his death. He was the son of Arnulf II of Flanders. His mother was Rozala of Lombardy. He was a seventh-generation descendant of Charlemagne through his father and an eighth-generation one through his mother.

      [edit] History
In contrast to his predecessors Baldwin turned his attention to the east and north, leaving the southern part of his territory in the hands of his vassals the counts of Guînes, Hesdin, and St. Pol.

To the north of the county Baldwin was given Zeeland as a fief by the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II, while on the right bank of the Scheldt river he received Valenciennes (1013) and parts of the Cambresis and Hainaut.

In the French territories of the count of Flanders, the supremacy of the Baldwini remained unchallenged. They organized a great deal of colonization of marshland along the coastline of Flanders and enlarged the harbour and city of Brugge.

      [edit] Family
Baldwin first married Ogive of Luxembourg, by whom he had a son and heir Baldwin V.

He later married Eleanor of Normandy (or perhaps Ainor or Judith), widow of Duke Welf of Bavaria and daughter of Richard II of Normandy, by whom he had at least one daughter Judith. This daughter married Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumberland.[1] These family connections demonstrate the political interests of the Flemish counts, both in the Kingdom of France, England and the Holy Roman Empire.

His granddaughter, Matilda of Flanders, would go on to marry William the Conqueror, therefore starting the line of Anglo-Norman Kings of England.

Called "of the handsome beard", a famous warrior who defended his country against the combined forces of Emperor Henry, King Robert of France and the Duke of Normandy

      "Barbatus" = with beard
    • Baldwin turned his attentions to the east and north, leaving the southern part of his territory in the hands of his vassals the counts of Guines, Hesdin, and St. Pol. To the east was Lotharingia, and here Baldwin took Valenciennes, the Cambresis, and Hainaut. It was not until 1056, during the minority of the Emperor Henry IV, then he fully secured this territory, which was then recognized as fier held of the emperor. In the more central and northerly parts of Flanders, the count's supremacy was unchallenged. Here there was a great deal of internal reclamation and colonization of marshland, all of which belonged to the counts of Flanders. (Wikipedia

Count of Flanders 988-1035. He greatly expanded Flemish dominions. He fought against the Capetian King of France, Robert II and the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II. Henry granted him the fief Valenciennes, the margraveship of Ghent, the land of Waes and Zeeland. Baldwin's son, Baldwin V, rebelled against his father in 1028, but two years later a peace was sworn at Oudenaarde. The old count continued to reign until his death in 1036.
