Robert I of Flanders (c. 1035–1093), known as '''Robert the Frisian''', was count of Flanders from 1071 to his death in 1093.

He was the younger son of Baldwin V of Flanders and Adela, a daughter of King Robert II of France. His elder brother, Baldwin, succeeded their father as Baldwin VI, Count of Flanders and his sister Matilda of Flanders had married William the Conqueror, then duke of Normandy and later King of England. His marriage to Gertrude of Saxony, dowager Countess of Holland in 1063 was not arranged by his father but nonetheless agreed to. She was the widow of Floris I, Count of Holland, who already had three children including a daughter Bertha. His nickname 'the Frisian' was obtained, apparently, when he acted as regent for his stepson Dirk V, Count of Holland.

Robert and Gertrude had the following children:

#'''Robert''' II, Count of Flanders, married Clementia of Burgundy.
#'''Adela of Flanders''' († 1115); married firstly King Canute IV of Denmark, and was the mother of Charles the Good, later Count of Flanders; married secondly Roger Borsa d'Hauteville, Duke of Apulia.
#'''Gertrude'''; married firstly Henry III, Count of Leuven and had four children; and secondly Theodoric II, Duke of Lorraine, by whom she was the mother of Theodoric of Alsace, also later Count of Flanders.
#'''Philip of Loo''', whose illegitimate son William of Ypres was also a claimant to the county of Flanders.
      #'''Ogiva''', Abbess of Messines.
      #'''Baldwin''' († bef. 1080).

Or, in the following order, according to Medlands
      * m (1063) as her second husband, GERTRUD of Saxony, widow of FLORIS I Count of Holland, daughter of BERNHARD II Duke of Saxony [Billung] & his wife Eilika von Schweinfurt (Schweinfurt [1028]-Veurne 18 Jul or 4 Aug 1113, bur Veurne):
      # Adela († 1115)
      # Robert II
      # Philippe "de Loo"
      # Ogive?
      # Badouin? († bef. 1080)
      # Gertrude

      [edit] History
He was the younger son of Baldwin V of Flanders and Adèle, a daughterof King Robert II of France.

Robert was originally intended to secure the northern borders of Flanders by his marriage to Gertrude of Saxony, Dowager Countess of Holland, but after his brother's death in 1070 he displaced his nephews and became count of Flanders.

      [edit] Family
By Gertrude of Saxony he had five children:

      Robert II
Adela (d. 1115), who first married king Canute IV of Denmark, and wasthe mother of Charles the Good, later count of Flanders. She then married Roger Borsa, duke of Apulia.
Gertrude, who married 1) Henry III, Count of Louvain and had 4 children.[1] 2) Thierry II, Duke of Lorraine, and was the mother of Thierry of Alsace, also later count of Flanders
Philip of Loo, whose illegitimate son William of Ypres was also a claimant to the county of Flanders
      Ogiva, abbess of Messines

      [edit] Count of Flanders
Robert's nephew Arnulf III (son of Baldwin VI of Flanders) succeeded his father in 1070 and was supported by his mother Richilde, Countess of Mons and Hainaut. However, Robert challenged Arnulf's succession tothe throne of Flanders and began rallying support mainly in northern Flanders (where the bulk of Arnulf's forces were located). Arnulf's ranks contained individuals such as Count Eustace II of Boulogne, Count Eustace III of Boulogne, and Godfrey of Bouillon.

Moreover, Arnulf was supported by King Philip I of France since Philip's aunt, Adela, married Baldwin V of Flanders. A contingent of ten Norman knights led by William FitzOsborn were among the forces sent by Philip to aid Arnulf. Robert's forces attacked Arnulf's numerically superior army at Cassel before it could organize. Arnulf himself was killed along with William FitzOsborn while Richilde was captured by Robert's forces. However, Robert himself was captured by Eustace II. Ultimately, Richilde was exchanged for Robert's freedom.[1] As a result of the battle Robert became count of Flanders.

    • Greve av Flandern.
    • #Générale##Générale#Profession : Marquis des Flamands.
    • The first that is known of the name Foster was about the year 1050, when Sir Richard Forester, called then by his Latinized name, Forestarius, went over to England. He accompanied his brother-in-law, William the Conqueror, and his father, Baldwin the IV, the forester, called "Le Debonaire," whose wife was Adela, daughter of Robert, King of France, and participated in the victorious battle at Hastings.
In early Foresters we find the English and Flemish ancestors of Reginald Foster and undoubtedly of all the emigrants to Massachusetts in a early day, and in fact every one now bearing this name in the world. The first of the name was Anacher Great Forester of Flanders, who died in 837. His son was Baldwin the first, of Flandres who started a long line of Baldwin's. This line turns into a long line of Sir Thomas Forster's. Again this is the line that all of us in the U.S. can trace our family lines back to.
Sir Richard Forester (or Forster) was surnamed "the Frislander", probably in reference to his place of origin in the Norman-French area of Frisia, or his holdings there. His sister Maud married William the Conqueror; their father is Ct. Baldwin V of Flanders; their mother is Adela, dau. of King Robert of France. Lillian Etter reported on Prodigy 03-09-1991: "Something not well known is that Richard had two children out of wedlock, Nicholas, d. 1092, abbot of Saint-Sudouin, and a daughter who married the Viscount of Bayeux. Richard was poisoned by the men of his brother, who did not get the name `The Devil' for nothing. The men of Richard in turn murdered Robert while on a pilgrimage to St. James de Compostella in Spain, not going to the Holy Land. Also...Robert and Henerreta [sic] of Falaise were married by the old way not that of the church and so was never seen by the church as legal."

      Book Description:
This book examines the history of a prominent castle lord of eleventh-century Anjou, a man who has been referred to in numerous works but has never been carefully studied. Robert the Burgundian was an Angevin knight whom the counts of Anjou allowed to amass enormous power on the northwestern march of Anjou. Until he departed for the First Crusade in 1098 Robert was the central figure in Count Fulk Rechin’s court. In contrast with many studies of the period, this work finds that Robert spent a long career as a major supporter of the counts of Anjou, rather than as someone undermining their authority. The author calls into question what is known about "feudal anarchy" in the eleventh century and finds that Robert and his descendants were indeed loyal to the count and were able to maintain Angevin power.
Remarkably, records of more than one hundred legal acts involving Robert, some based on his actual words, survive today. They reveal a richly textured life, establishing family connections, political alliances, and relations with the Church as Robert struggled to maintain his lands and position through invasion, civil war, and episcopal interdict. Of special interest is Robert’s participation in the First Crusade after a personal visit by Pope Urban II, and his interaction with the counts and the effect this had on the development of the Angevin state.
