      CONRAD, son of CONRAD [Welf] Comte de Paris & his wife --- (-876). His parentage is deduced from Regino who names "Ruodolfus filius Chuonradi, nepos Huggonis abbatis"[87], the latter being recorded in the Miraculis Sancti Germani as "Hugo" one of the sons of "Chuonradus princeps", the patron of the church of Saint-Germain at Auxerre[88]. He helped save Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks after the invasion of Ludwig II "der Deutsche" King of the East Franks. Comte d'Auxerre. He fell into disgrace in 861, and passed into the service of the sons of Emperor Lothaire. He received from King Louis II the territories of Geneva, Lausanne and Sion. Marquis of Transjurania (which later evolved into the kingdom of Burgundy) in Dec 864 after he killed comte Hubert [Bosonide][89].

      m WALDRADA, daughter of ---. Louis III "le Bègue" King of the West Franks confirmed the property of the abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre, including property "villam…Modolaius" and the church built there donated by "Conradus comes…mulieris suæ Vadraldæ", by charter dated 29 Jan 877[90].

      CONRAD, son of CONRAD [Welf] Comte de Paris & his wife --- (-876). Marquis Conrad & his wife had [three] children:

      1. RUDOLF (-25 Oct 911). Regino names "Ruodolfus filius Chuonradi, nepos Huggonis abbatis" when recording his occupation of the land between "Iurum et Alpes Penninas…at apud sanctum Mauritium"[95]. He was proclaimed as RUDOLF I King of Upper Burgundy in Jan 888.

      2. ADELAIS (-after 14 Jul 929). She is named as sister of "Rodulfi regis" in the latter's 10 Jun 888 charter[96], and in her own 14 Jan 929 grant to Cluny[97]. She names "Richardi principis domni mei" in this latter document. After her husband died, she retired to a monastery. She transferred the monastery of Romainmoutier to the monastery of Cluny by charter dated 14 Jul 929[98]. m ([887/88]) RICHARD Comte d'Autun, son of comte BUVINUS [Bouvin] & his wife --- d'Arles (-1 Jan 921, bur Sens, abbaye de Sainte-Colombe). He was later known as RICHARD "le Justicier" Duke of Burgundy.

      3. [---. m ---.] [One possible child:]

      >a) [ADELAIS. According to Poupardin[99], Adelais wife of Louis King [of Provence] was the daughter of Rudolf I King of Upper Burgundy. Presumably this is based on the two charters dated 28 Mar 943 and 18 May 943 under which "Carolus comes" is named "consanguineus noster" by Conrad I King of Burgundy[100]. The potential problem with this hypothesis is the apparently impossible marriage of King Louis with his own niece. Possible solutions would be either that Adelais was the daughter of King Rudolf by an earlier otherwise unrecorded marriage, that King Rudolf's known wife Willa was not the daughter of Boson King [of Provence], or that Adelais was more remotely related to the king as tentatively shown in this document. The problem is discussed fully by Settipani[101]. Another problem is that “consanguineus” in the 943 charters could indicate a much more remote relationship than second cousin. The estimated date for her marriage is based on its having taking place during the ex-emperor's period of exile in Vienne, before his recall to Italy, at a time when he would not have been considered a great marriage prospect by more prominent prospective fathers-in-law. "Hludowicus…imperator augustus" granted property at Tressin, Viennois to "fideli nostro Girardo" at the request of "coniux nostra Adalaida" by charter dated 18 Jan 915[102]. m ([Jun 902/905]) LOUIS "l'Aveugle" King [of Provence], ex-King of Italy, ex-Emperor LOUIS III, son of BOSON King [of Provence] & his second wife Ermengardis [Carolingian] (before 882-Arles 5 Jun 928).

      Conrad II, Duke of Transjurane Burgundy
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

      Conrad II the Younger was the Count of Auxerre from 864 until his death. He was a son of Conrad I of Auxerre, and Adelaide; an older brother of Hugh the Abbot; and a member of the Bavarian branch of the Welfs.

      In 858, at the coaxing of Charles the Bald, his cousin, he and his brother betrayed Louis the German when he sent them on an espionage mission and went over to Charles, who rewarded them handsomely because he had lost his Bavarian honores. He acted as Duke of Transjurane (Upper) Burgundy from then until about 864.
      He married Judith, daughter of Eberhard of Friuli, and later Waldrada of Worms, by whom he left a son, Rudolf, who later became King of Transjurane Burgundy.

      * Rudolf I., † 25.

      Konrad I. († 21. September nach 862) war ein Sohn des Grafen Welf I. und der Heilwig, ein Bruder der Kaiserin Judith († 843) und der Königin Hemma. Aufgrund dieser Verwandtschaft wurde er einer der engsten Vertrauten des Kaisers Ludwig der Fromme († 840), der auch dessen Haft 833/834 teilte, und dem es gelang, in Oberschwaben seiner Familie eine starke Machtposition aufzubauen.

      Er war einer der drei Gesandten, die 842 von Karl dem Kahlen und Ludwig dem Deutschen mit außerordentlichen Vollmachten ausgestattet zu deren Bruder Lothar I. geschickt wurden, um über die Teilung des fränkischen Reiches zu verhandeln und Lothar den von ihnen bestimmten dritten Teil des Reiches anzubieten. Die beiden anderen Gesandten waren der Seneschall Adalhard und Graf Cobbo der Ältere.

      Nach dem Tod Ludwigs des Frommen war er am Zustandekommen des Vertrags von Verdun (843) beteiligt. Er war nun Berater seines anderen Schwagers, Ludwigs des Deutschen, bis er diesen 859 während eines Feldzugs im Westfrankenreich verließ und sich gemeinsam mit seinen Söhnen dessen Halbbruder auf der Gegenseite, seinem leiblichen Neffen Karl dem Kahlen anschloss. Er war bereits zehn Jahre zuvor nach seiner Heirat mit Aelis, einer Tochter des Grafen Hugo von Tours aus der Familie der Etichonen, als Graf von Paris in das Königreich seines Neffen einbezogen. Aufgrund dieses Seitenwechsels verlor Konrad sämtliche Ämter und Grafschaften im Ostfrankenreich, wurde aber später im Westen durch die Grafschaft Auxerre entschädigt.

      Konrad führte folgende Titel:

      * 830 „Dux nobilissimus“ (d.h. Herzog in Alemannien),
      * 839 – nach 849 Graf im Argengau,
      * 839 Graf im Alpgau,
      * 844 Graf im Linzgau,
      * 849 Graf von Paris,
      * nach 860 Graf von Auxerre als Gefolgsmann Karls des Kahlen;

      Konrad und Aelis hatten mindestens drei Söhne:

      * Konrad II., Markgraf von Transjuranien
      * Hugo Abbas, † 12. Mai 886
      * Rudolf, † vor 864, Abt von Saint-Riquier, 849 Abt von Jumièges

      sowie vermutlich auch

      * Welf II. (der aber auch ein Sohn von Konrads Bruder Rudolf sein könnte), 842/850 Graf im Linzgau, 852-858 Graf im Alpgau, der wahrscheinliche Stammvater der schwäbischen Welfen.

      Aelis heiratete nach dem Tod Konrads in zweiter Ehe 864 den Robertiner Robert den Starken (le Fort), Graf von Tours und Paris († 15. September 866), womit sie Konrads Sohn Hugo Abbas, weniger Konrad II., der bei Karl dem Kahlen in Ungnade gefallen war und das Reich verlassen hatte, durch die Anbindung an die Robertiner erneut ins Machtzentrum des Westfrankenreichs rückte.
